Malaya Steambot

Sebelum balik cuti raya cina ni, sempatlah kiranya saya bersama teman sebilik memuaskan nafsu makan di Restoran Malaya Steambot ni..

Sebenarnya tak berhajat pun nak makan luar, tp si Mukhlis ajak, saya pun ikut je la..
Katanya nak makan steamboat tp xtau kat mana, maka menggoogle la saya d PC..

Pusing punya pusing dlm internet, maka bertemulah kami dengan restoran ini..
Dekat pun dekat (dekat je dgn Giant Batu Caves nuh.), harga pun ok..

Start engin kereta, bergeraklah kami ke sana..
Senang je pun nak jumpa restoran ni...

 Antara yang ada

 Mukhlis memilih fishballs etc.

Makanan laut pilihan saya

Maka berendamlah mereka di dalam sup tomyam dan juga sup biasa

Lapar? Ada mee goreng, nasi putih dan lauk2nya..

Keadaan kedai.. Masa ni belum ramai lagi.. Selesa pun selesa.. Hot plate ada kat tengah2 meja..

Haa.. Ini harganya.. Makan la sepuas hati.. Ok la kan.. :) WiFi free pn ada..

Setelah habis semua ditelan...

Last but not least, dessert.. Aiskrim dan ABC...

Dari pukul 8pm sampai 10pm kami menjamu selera..

Secara keseluruhan, puas hati makan kat sini..
Berbaloi dengan RM23 yang di bayar..
Macam2 ada, dari seafood, fishballs etc., cuma x sempat nak merasa semua sebab dah kekenyangan..

Saya boleh bagi 4/5.. Value for money.. :)

Nak pergi, ini map dia...

Atau, boleh je ajak saya, saya tunjuk jalannya.. hehe~

Gendang gedut tali kecapi, kenyang perut, suka hati! ;)

p/s wah, dah 50 post rupanya... :)

New Year and C.E.D.A.R

2010 has left us and Welcome, 2011!

Happy New Year 2011 to my readers! :)

My Sony Ericsson J108i a.k.a Cedar

Talking about new year, this is also a new thing for me! ;)

This Sony Ericsson Cedar has made his way to my family of my prized possessions.

I bought it for RM295, an original set from a reputable online HP shop.

Why I like to buy things online?

Because I "tak reti to tawar-menawar, malas nak check betul2" whether the phone is original or AP set etc. So when i came across this one online shop, and after verifying that online store is actually 'real', so I made my decision to buy SE Cedar from there.

I've check other prices too and the price offered is competitive (you'll get what you pay)..

What does this SE Cedar offer? You can read it here.

Yeah, it's basic 3G handphone etc. but for me it will be suffice for my own use.

I'm not the type that needs 'on-the-go' internet, read and editing e-mails on the phone etc. that smart phones offer i.e BlackBerry, SE Xperia, Nokia C6 etc. So, most the functions are overkill for me and so does the price!

F Y I, it's my first "coloured screen-mms-mp3-camera" phone for me (unbelievable?)

I've started with a clamp-shell Motorola phone when I started my studies at CFS IIUM (formerly known as Matriculation Centre), even then it's an old model. Then moved to Nokia 1-series (1100, 1200 and its siblings.)

Before last puasa month, one of my Nokia phones had been stolen from my own room (I use 2 numbers, Maxis and Celcom. The stolen one was Maxis.)

Thus, after replacing the SIM card (for the 3rd time!) at Maxis Centre KLCC, surely I need a new phone to use with that SIM card and it's actually in my planning to buy a new phone as my 'graduation present' from myself, to myself.

As if Sony Ericsson read my mind (pardon the exaggeration), they just released SE Cedar last June, and released for Malaysian market, last November. The specifications of the phone was just what I needed, and the price was in my budget, so walla, I bought it!

After years using Nokia, using a Sony Ericsson model is a new experience.
Although it's not that different, I still need time to familiarize myself using it and be comfortable with it.

A little review from my side:

Pros:
  • It is what i want in terms of specification
  • It's one of the SE GreenHeart models (the models in GreenHeart series are made with minimum waste, using recycled paper and water-based paint, using e-manual rather than paper-based manual etc. Other models are SE Elm and Aspen)
  • Great MP3 player and sound (I don't need a separate MP3 player)
  • A microUSB cable can be your phone charger and also as a data transfer cable between ur PC n phone
Cons:
  • You will only get the handphone, battery, charger and some papers (it is a small box!)
  • You need to buy your own earphones (if you don't have one), memory card (if you don't have one) and a microUSB data transfer cable (if you don't have one) (SE considers these things are common and you should have them laying around in your house)
  • A mediocre 2MP camera with no flash n autofocus (well, i don't need that camera too much)
  • No number-coded keypad lock like Nokia
  • Using the e-manual in the phone was not as smooth as reading a paper-based manual

Well, the cons actually just small matters and will not make the SE Cedar a failure or a bad phone.

As a sub-RM300 phone, it is a value-for-price phone.

As a conclusion, for me, this Sony Ericsson Cedar phone is great..

A new phone to start a new year! :)

DSLR? Nikon or Canon?

Ok, for my first post in this year end month of December (b t w, my birthday was on last November, 29th November to be exact.. 24 years old all ready.. hee~), i'll be answering a quite similar question posted to me by my friends regarding their first DSLR choice if they want to buy a DSLR for themselves (i know, i know, i'm not a professional photographer, but they still want to ask me, how can i reject their questions.?).

"sir, want to buy DSLR, which brand is good? Nikon or Canon?"
"mana gambar cantik lagi, Nikon ke Canon?"

the above 2 questions were the most usually questioned question that my friends asked me. (yeah, my close friends called me 'sir', why? i'll tell you in my next posting..)

Now, a general introduction first before I answer their questions (and maybe yours, my readers..^.^), after 1 year owning a DSLR (u can read it here) and learning about photography, what I can say is, the brand doesn't matter.

Nikon or Canon is not the only players in this DSLR world, they are Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus etc., but why this 2 names of Canon and Nikon are popular, maybe because of their brand are used by professionals around the world and the public knew about them (easy example: Look at the picture below. Look at their lenses; if they are white, they are Canon users, if they are black, they are Nikon users.)

Credit to: http://www.lensextender.com/sports-photography---olympics/

Because of that, we'll focus on Nikon and Canon DSLR's for the time being.

(1) Which brand is good?

The first question i'll ask them back is how much their budget are.

If their budget is not limited or maybe more then RM4000, it's up to them which brand they prefer. Nikon or Canon, doesn't matter. Just go the store, try them. Which one is more comfortable to hold, user-friendly etc. Since I'm a Nikonian, i'll recommend Nikon D90 (now it's around RM3300 with the kit lens) and the balance, buy the AF 50mm F1.8D lens for around RM400+ OR a Nissin speedlight/flash and walla, u have a good kit to start your photography journey or hobby.

Then, what if you have a strict budget to follow, maybe around RM2000, then i'll recommend buying a Canon. Why? Because Nikon's entry level DSLRs (D5000 and below) have some restrictions if compared to Canon's. What are the restrictions?
  • Nikon's entry level DSLR's doesn't have autofocus motor in their camera body. Thus, will limit some lenses to only use manual focus. As a beginner (me myself), u'll will depend on autofocus most of the time. Thus, your selection of lenses if u want to upgrade or buy a new lens is limited and costly. You'll need Nikon AF-S lenses to have that autofocus ability when using your camera. The AF 50mm F1.8D lens I mentioned above needed a motor on the camera body to enable u to autofocus. Although most lenses in Nikon line-up are now AF-S, but some of them are not in our reach in terms of the price.
  • Nikon's entry level DSLR's also doesn't have some original Nikon accessories to be used with the DSLR. As example, battery grip. My D5000 doesn't have an original Nikon battery grip (to extend your camera life since u'll use 2 batteries in the battery grip and for better ergonomics when shooting in portrait orientation or using telephoto lenses), but a 3rd party battery grip. Nikon doesn't manufacture battery grips for the entry level models.

These 2 restrictions, for me, warrants a good excuse why I prefer Canon if u're on a limited budget.

When using Canon, u'll have no problems if u want to upgrade or buy a new lens. Their lenses have an autofocus motor in themselves. So, u can use autofocus in all Canon bodies, regarding it is the most expansive one or it is the cheapest one.

Regarding the accessories like a battery grip, Canon do manufacture battery grips for their entry level models unlike Nikon. Thus, u'll have a perfect match and ergonomics for your body and battery grip.

 Conclusion:
  • no budget constraints, either Nikon or Canon
  • if budget is less RM3000 or below, take Canon (EOS 1000D with kit lens)
  • so, if u want to commit to Nikon, start with D90 to have full lens and accessories compatibilities

(2) picture quality

here, it's up to u. there are many sample pictures in the internet using both Nikon and Canon systems. thus, it's up to ur eyes to see which brand is better in terms of their quality and color.

For me, the question 'which picture is better' is irrelevant if u're using DSLR (i'm talking about in a usual condition/casual photography. Forget about the quality in high ISO's, resolution, megapixels etc. Treat the question as a comparison using compact camera and DSLRs.)

I love the Nikon's color renditions as compared to Canon. For me, my Nikon D5000 gives a punchier color in my pictures when compared to Canon EOS 500D. But, as I said, it's up to ur personal preferences. Some will prefer Canon's color, some will prefer Nikon's.

Conclusion:
  • both brand, Canon and Nikon will give u a good picture quality.

All of these comparisons are from my experiences, readings and research. There are actually many more factors to consider, but for beginners, i think this 2 factors are the most important when thinking on which brand to get in into.

But, the main thing is, get information and a hands-on explanation from anyone who have experience in photography. Just by reading, sometimes u'll not get the whole picture.

Maybe an equally good advice is, try to buy and use a second-hand DSLR (but make sure that the used DSLR u're buying is still in good condition) to learn and explore the functions of a DSLR. You'll have more value in mony and at the same time, learning to use them.

Find what is your preferences in photography i.e landscapes, potraits, weddings, macro etc. Each preferences have their own photography kits, body, lenses etc. After that, then maybe u'll invest in a good, new DSLR.

"Enjoy your photography!"

disclaimer: this posting is from my own experience and research. i've made an effort to present my writing as accurate as possible. please, DO NOT refer to this article ONLY when trying to decide. find as much as u can any info and most importantly, ask and have someone to explain to you hands-on. take this article as an advice from a friend to a friend, not a technical advice. 10 Things You Should Know About A True Blue Johorean

1. They end 9 out of 10 sentences with Ekkk… Ekk ialah trademark orang Johor. Digunakan di hujung SETIAP ayat menggantikan tanda soal (question mark). Contoh :- Ni awak punyer ekk? Nama awak saper ekk? Kenapa kite kaler tak cantik ekk ? Dan macam-macam ekk lagi. Aku teringat semasa aku sekolah dulu, aku dan member sebelah aku boring yang amat di dalam kelas, so to keep us awake, kami dok mengira berapa kali Cikgu sebut ekk. In a period of 40 minutes, dekat 100 kali! Lepas tu kami gelarkan Cikgu tu as Cikgu Fadzillah* Ekk. (*bukan nama sebenar).

2. They refer to Johor Bahru as Johor and not JB. Kalau orang di negeri Johor sebut Johor, it meant Johor Bahru (JB), the city dan bukan Johor, the state. Biasa digunakan oleh mereka yang tinggal di luar Bandar Johor Baru seperti di Masai- chusettes umpamanya. Contoh : Beb, gua nak turun Johor laa. Lu mahu ikut gua tak? So, if you ARE already in Johor, tak kira di daerah mana – if the locals kata nak pergi Johor, it means nak ke Johor Bahru. Jangan pulak buat lawak bongok** berkata, ” Eh, lu kan dah ada kat Johor?” Or worse, jangan memandai nak tambah ekk with that question.

3. They pronounce Muar as MUOR. (kena juih bibir sikit) In fact you pronounce everything that ends with “AR” as “OR”. Contoh : Aku kena pakai seluor besor untuk main bola kat Bandor Muor besok. (Aku kena pakai seluar besar nak main bola di Bandar Muar besok). Aku teringat Kakak tegur aku bila aku cakap macam tu. Kenapa Mama sebut besar, BESOR ? Slipper , SLIPPOR ? Aku tergelak. Aku Cuma speak like that bila berjumpa dengan true blue Johorean aje. Lapo (lapar), penampor (penampar), ulor (ular), pagor (pagar) dan lain-lain.

4. They are brash with a CRAZY sense of humour. Honestly, I belum pernah jumpa orang Johor yang serious or square to a T. Or cannot take a joke. Walaupun pendiam atau pemalu , but their sense of humour boleh tahan gak. Almost all of them (yang aku jumpa dan kenal lah) are either loyar buruk or bigor **. Baik di kampung mahu di Bandar. The sense of humour is unique that I find kadang-kadang orang luar (non-Johorean) agak takut with the brashness of budak-budak Johor. (Did you see Majalah 3 the other night – see how Tunku Yem (nama manja Tunku Mahkota Johor) bercerita pasal anakanda dia Tunku Ismail ? Haha…. that is exactly my point!)

5. Diorang ada ENDUT **. Kalau tak pernah berendut, sure pernah ada endut or busuk-busuk pun teringin nak ada endut. Contoh ayat : Haa…kau dah ada endut yer ? Kau pergi berendut kat mana ? Orang berendut dia pun nak berendut.

6. Diorang Makan Gula Tarik, Sagun, Gula Kandy, Bobotok….Dah lama aku tak tengok atau makan gula tarik, sagun or kandy. Ada lagi ke bebenda ni kat Johor ? Aku tak boleh nak describe dengan teliti these things cos it has been 30 years since I last tasted them. Seperti Kak P cakap – makanan seperti botok botok. Kalau out of Johor, botok-botok dikenali dengan nama PAIS IKAN. Jangan tanya aku how to describe the ingredients cos aku tak berapa gemar makan sebab guna banyak sangat daun ( aku tak suka makan sayur – especially ulam). Yang aku tahu – pakai daun segala daun, termasuk daun betik dan gunakan kari ikan and balut dengan daun-daun tu dan kukus. Aku pernah tanya my Dad dulu – kenapa buruk benor nama dia bebotok. Then my Dad cerita : Di zaman dulu ada seorang nenek yang tinggal seorang diri. Everyday cucu dia akan datang bawak makanan. Nenek ini suka sangat pais ikan dengan bubur so dia suruh cucu ni bawak tetiap hari. Bila cucu tu bawak makanan lain, Nenek akan tanya “Mana Bubur Tok? “. Lama-lama Bubur Tok jadilah Bebotok – kesan dari cakap cepat-cepat. Itulah ceritanya. Aku kecik lagi masa my Dad cerita tu. So, kalau dia kelentong aku – maka kelentonglah cerita bebotok tu. Sekian adanya.

7. Pernah (or berangan nak) jadi Mat Rock.

Both kulit dan isi. I don’t like to eat telur pindang, so I cannot to describe the taste. Normally orang buat telur pindang ni for special occasion, seperti majlis perkahwinan. Zaman dulu-dulu, you can tell the social class of the tuan rumah – normally orang kaya-kaya jer buat telur pindang ni sebab ianya rumit dan makan masa berjam-jam therefore menggunakan kos yang tinggi.

9. Tidur atas LECA** (rhyme with letak and baca, the non-baku way). Baju simpan dalam GEROBOK **.

10. They never watch RTM sebab semua cerita dah tengok kat TV Singapore n indonesia!!! When I was growing up, aku cukup suka tengok TV Singapore sebab iklan dia semua dari overseas, very menarik. Besides the cerita yang terkinilah. Yang aku suka ialah iklan jeans Levi’s ( Let your love flow), iklan lagu Coke ( I’d like to build the world a home), iklan Kodak (Times of Your Life -Paul Anka ). As you go further up north (of Johor), you can see aerial TV semua setinggi pokok kelapa – semata-mata nak dapatkan siaran from Singapore n indonesia!…tv3 bru nk kluakn cter malin kundang kite dah bis tgk Apa lagi EKK?

Kamus Johor :

Saing - pergi bersama2..”nnt kite saing ehh pi sekolah”

Bongok – bodoh

Bigor – gila-gila, contoh :- Apek Senario tu macam budak BIGOR ekk ?

Endut – makwe/pakwe. Awek/balak. Boifren/girlfren. Boleh digunakan tanpa mengira jantina.

Berendut - berpasangan. Pergi berendut- dating.

Botok-botok, bebotok – sejenis makanan menggunakan ikan, ditambah memacam dedaun, letak serbuk kari (don’t ask me – aku tak reti buat) dan dibalut dengan daun betik, diikat dengan sebelum dikukus. Alah, macam Pais Ikan tuh.

Leca - tilam. Normally dibuat sendiri menggunakan kekabu (orang zaman dulu-dulu semua DIY – tak ada Vono, Slumberland ).

Gerobok, Gobok -Almari. Tak kiralah simpan kain baju ke, simpan pinggan mangkok ke.

Sajak - sesuai @ tidak -bkn puisi tau!!…cm nih ayat die..’sajak x beg nih pki ngn bju ni??”

roti perata – roti canai

semangka -tembikai

epok2 -karipap

Sekadar berkongsi mungkin ramai yang tahu tapi xperasan

Why I am a Nikonian..?

For me, I'm a Nikonian bcoz I'm using Nikon D5000..
Lens (s) AF-S DX 18-55mm VR

Why do I choose Nikon?
  •  love Nikon's colour rendition (tested Canon, but the colour is not punchy as Nikon's)
  •  a 'camera only' brand (Canon reminds me of a printer n a calculator! hehe)
  • Nikon's 18-55mm VR kit lens is the best kit lens when reviewed with other kit lens.
  • readings so many blogs (mainly professionals) that switched their Canon's kit to Nikon's kit and being very happy with their switch (but I know that some Nikon users that switched to Canon)
  • Nikon's low light quality/cleaner noise in high ISO
  • Nikon's flash system (Nikon's CLS)
  • Nikon's lenses optical quality (Nikkor)
  • my budget permits me to a Nikon D5000, not Canon EOS 500D.. (both cameras were announced almost at the same time, and their specs are quite the same)
  • Nikon berat sikit, so it's a stable grip for a big hand like me..

but, some cons for Nikon:
  • my D5000 is an entry-level camera, thus it doesn't have an in-body autofocusing motor and I need AF-S Nikon lenses, or HSM Sigma lenses that have autofocusing motor in their lenses.  Other than these lenses, I need to manual focus only.(it's a pity because I love to have a normal '50mm' lens, but Nikon only have AF (not AF-S) 50mm f1.8D that costs only RM400++. For AF lenses, they need an in-body autofocus motor to enable them to autofocus. The equivalent AF-S 50mm f1.4D costs RM1800++! For 35mm f1.8 DX, it costs around RM800+.)
  • Unlike Canon EOS that have autofocusing motors in all their lenses, thus the connections between the body and lenses are electronic-only connection and can autofocus with any Canon camera body. A Canon EF 50mm f1.8II only costs RM350++, and can autofocus on any Canon bodies. I've tried manual focusing using that Nikon AF 50mm and it's quite hard to get in-focus pics bcoz it's hard to see in the viewfinder whether it's in focus or not. U also need to adjust your distance between the subject to have focus on your subject. Gosh~
  • I'll like if Nikon can have like Canon L series group of lenses.. Yup, there are Nikon equivalent lenses, but it's good if Nikon can group them (as example the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM II is the same as the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8 VR II, both RM7000++).. maybe "Nikon N series" or others..(but I can see that Canon premium L lenses are marked by a red stripe, and Nikon premium lenses are marked by a gold stripe)

err.. it's like that I'm writing a review here.. so loonngg~
sorry if u're tired reading it..

these informations above are from my readings and also my own experience and observations..

(the above post is an edited version of my post in an online forum)

I'm trying to have a speedlight/flashgun next year and the thing I waited for a long time, a new Nikon Speedlight, replacing the SB-600 (maybe) has been announced by Nikon, a Nikon SB-700.
But I still need to wait for the official price in Malaysia. If quoted from Nikon USA price (USD 330) and converted to RM, it will be around RM1024, but i'll think it will be reduced to around Rm900++. If it's true and afforadable, then I can go to SB-700. But if not, I will use the Nissin Di622 speedlight (around RM430++).

Now you can see the enormous difference in price (it's rm500+ you know!). Why? Because Nissin is a 3rd party brand unlike Nikon (it's an own camera brand). 3rd party is not 2nd hand. It's another brand, but can be used with your DSLR camera (example, for lenses, not only Nikon lenses you can use, but 3rd party brands like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc).

It's actually an investment. If I think I need to sell my SB-700, I will get a much better price if compared to the Nissin one. 3rd parties equipments are actually made for its value (cheaper).
Some 3rd party lenses actually can surpass the quality of Nikon lenses. But that's not usually the case for speedlights. Because it's an electronic equipment, it's better to use own brand speedlights because both the camera and speedlight will be in-sync with each other and will not create too much problems (And it's actually an advice from Nikon).

But, as I said before, it's only a planning. If I can't afford it, maybe I'll resort to an older sibling of SB-700, the SB-600, or the Nissin Di622. After all, the reviews I read in internet forums favours the Nissin Di662 compared to other 3rd party speedlights made for Nikon. There's no problem in using the Nissin speedlight for their Nikon camera bodies.

A speedlight is actually a necessity for me. Since I usually cover in-door programs for my societies, the built-in flash is usually just enough, but I need the bounce capability of a speedlight. It can improve my photos by giving a more subtle light and get rid of the ugly shadows from my photos.

I hope I can get a hand on that Sb-700 later on. We'll just wait and see.
But for now, I'm still trying to hone my photography skills before the addition of a speedlight. And I have 2 customers waiting for me to somehow 'rent' me for their convocation ceremony..
I hope I can be a good photographer for them...
